The Lost Abbey Track #10

IMG_865713.5% abv. Imperial Stout from The Lost Abbey in San Marcos, CA. This beer began as a fresh Serpent’s Stout base aged in bourbon barrels with oodles of coffee and cacao nibs added shortly before packaging. Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez their head brewer asked about creating a coffee and cacao nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with their fans. The brewery waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacao nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, they added 17 pounds of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 pounds of TCHO Cacao Nibs to steep before packaging. Pours a beautiful black one-finger mocha head. Sweet roasted malts, oak, cacao nibs, dark chocolate and coffee are bought out to the nose. Flavors of coffee, cocoa nibs, oak, slight vanilla, and the bourbon is extremely well-hidden. Delicious creamy mouthfeel! Very solid beer all around.
