FiftyFifty Totality Imperial Stout

FiftyFifty Totality10% ABV.Imperial Stout from FiftyFifty Brewing Co. in Truckee, California. This is the base beer for the barrel aged Eclipse Imperial Stout variants that I love. In order for Totality to, well, become “Eclipse”, Totality is aged for a minimum of 180 days in oak bourbon barrels (i.e., Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, Four Roses, Makers Mark, Four Roses, etc.). The time spent in those barrels adds a plethora of flavors to the already rich Imperial Stout. At first taste there is a large presence of dark chocolate, espresso and warmth from the alcohol of the beer. Oak barrel character then comes into play with hints of vanilla and maybe coconut, followed by mild bitterness from the hops, and then a nice long lingering finish with hints of tobacco, dark dried fruit and more chocolate. Anyway, back to Totality, I was fortunate for a buddy to bring back a growler from his trip to California and share it with me. This beer pours black as night with a decent one finger tan head leaving decent lacing throughout. Aromas of sweet chocolate, dark roasted malt, molasses, licorice, dark fruits and a fair amount of booze. The flavors start off with plenty of chocolate slowly giving way to hints of dark fruits, molasses, licorice, day old coffee and the dark malt. The back finish is pretty sweet with quite a bit of booze, lingering on the palate long after consumption. Heavy body mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. I have wanted to try this one ever since I tried my first Eclipse beer. It is always nice to see where all the flavors are coming from in those Eclipse series. Overall this is a good stout, but I prefer it once it has seen a barrel.
