Speakeasy Scarface Imperial Stout

speakeasy scarface9.5% ABV. Imperial Stout from Speakeasy Ales and Lagers in San Francisco, California. I was able to enjoy sharing a bottle of this while watching Scarface and puffing on a Padron cigar. This is a complicated brew – behind its fiercely black exterior is a mélange of subtly different roasted malt flavors that add nuance and depth to a style of beer that is too often heavy and one dimensional. To add a bit of roundness to the flavor Speakeasy diverted about 20% of the brew into their Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, one of which they topped up with cacao nibs from their friends at local San Francisco organic chocolate makers, TCHO, for a period of oak-aging before blending it back into the primary batch. Pours pitch black with a very nice 1 inch dark tan head that lasted quite well throughout. Aroma of light bourbon, oak, dark chocolate, and perhaps some molasses. The flavor is slightly sweet with that hint of dark chocolate, molasses, bourbon, earth, and licorice. Full bodied with average carbonation for the style. Some boozy warmth at the finish. This is probably an underrated beer at inexpensive prices. I’ll be glad to have a bottle again.
