Brookie Brown Ale at Zeno’s in State College

Unknown ABV. American Brown Ale from Elk Creek Café & Alewerks in Millheim, Pennsylvania. I had this brew on draft from Zeno’s Pub in State College before the legendary PSU v Nebraska game (the week of the damn Sandusky and Paterno scandal). Zeno’s pub is a really cool underground pub with ton of character (see pictures below). I went with the local flavor with the Brookie Brown. Pours deep dark brown along with a tan and firm, patchy head. Sweet malts in the nose: brown sugar, some toasted grains or toated bread, and even some light roast notes. Flavor turns more towards ashy maple syrup over time, with some dry hops and light char noticed as well, before finishing slightly on the sweet side (caramel malt). Smooth and full bodied. A surprising, good brown that is fresh and lively, and hoppy for the style. What a nice beer!
