The only authority for all things beer…
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Because today is such a special day, I figured I’d do a double feature! I wanted to do a write-up on two highly regarded IPAs from the Surly Brewing Company from Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. The Furious beer is rated #29 in Beeradvocate and unranked in Ratebeer. The Abrasive is rated #55 in Beeradvocate and unranked in Ratebeer. It was an interesting duo to evaluate from Surly which is making some noise in the beer community largely because of their wildly popular ‘Darkness’ imperial stout beer.
Furious: 6.2% ABV. American IPA. Poured from a 16oz can (no date stamped) into a dimple glass. Pours a deep reddish copper hue and gives off an average creamy beige head that mostly diminished. Fair display of lacework. Clear flat looking body with an amber color. Aroma was very floral with notes of amongst other things pine, citrus, grapefruit, flowery. Also light notes of toasted malt, caramel, orange peel. Medium bodied with an extremely dry texture and a soft carbonation. Heavy bitter hoppy notes with only light sweet malty notes. Heavy dry, bitter and long lasting finish. Beeradvocate: A; Ratebeer: 100/100. theBeerAuthority: B+
Abrasive: 9% ABV. American DIPA. Poured from a 16oz can dated 12-29-10. Pours clear dark orange with one finger white head. Aroma was impressive. Loaded with dank hops and tons of citrus. Flavor was loaded with bitter hops, but lacking all the citrus (I’m picking up mostly orange here) and a good malt back bone. Abrasive is a good name for this brew as if you don’t like a ton of bitter hops than this one might not be for you. Mild carbonation going on. Solid beer, but a bit of a disappointment based on other rankings. Beeradvocate: A; Ratebeer: 99/100. theBeerAuthority: A-.
