Uncle Jacob’s Stout

avery uncle jacobs17.42% ABV. Thanks to Mackinnon Photography for the awesome photo. Uncle Jacobs is an imperial stout from Avery Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado. In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery released Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year. I heard this was one of Avery’s most sought-after so I was able to get my hands through craft beer connections then later was able to try more at a beer festival last Fall.  This beer pours deep, opaque black with thin, fizzy tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma gives off notes of chocolate, espresso, caramel, raisin, sweet dark licorice, brown sugar, vanilla-tinged-oak, and bourbon. Flavor is huge just as I hoped. A little too warm, but the fact that it’s chuck full of flavor helps it ease down the throat. Rich sweet dark chocolate tones on the palate first, some fig/raisin dark fruitiness, with a little tone of roasted coffee, some brown sugar, earthy licorice, caramel, a little bit of boozy vanilla, a twang of oak, and a mellow but warming bourbon ending. This is a rich and satisfying stout! One of my favorites for sure…
